 How this accelerated class works?

 First read the syllabus in its entirety.

 If you are not already in Angel, login in using your student ID # for the "Username" and your 6 digit birth date for the password. Here is the link to Angel:

Begin each week by doing the following:

1. Click on the Lessons tab. Everything you need to know is there!

 2. Click on the folder of the current week and follow the instructions for that week, clicking on the Weekly Viewing/Reading Assignments. Make sure you click on these and read the directions. See viewing note below

 3.  To see the assigned Movie Magic segments o for free on your computer just log in with Username: Jim and Password Media. You will see a list of episodes. View the assigned episodes for each week and take notes. You can go back to these anytime and for the open book tests.

 4. Do not click on a test until you are ready to take it, as you only have one chance to take each test. Tests will appear in the appropriate weeks folder during that actual week. However all three tests will be open to take anytime during the session. That means you may take them at your convenience right up to the final week. WARNING: These tests are 45 question multiple choice and true false tests. Not easy to some. They are open book and you may go back to the videos to find the answers but we highly suggest you stay on our schedule and NOT wait until the last minute.

 CONTENT:

 You will see 13 thirty minute videos on SF/X. "Movie Magic" has licensed WVC a special grant to show a full season of their series. These videos are  material for your learning. They are an historical look at Special Effects. Note: The ILM Book is he most important part of this class for the questions for the tests are  from the book and the videos. In addition you will be able to read the most current state-of-the-art digital SF/X in the required reading material. The intent of this online course is to educate students about Special Effects in the cinema. This course will show you how SF/X are done in specific movies. This course will also give you the state-of-the-art (past and present) information on digital SF/X.

SPECIAL REMINDER TO ALL STUDENTS:

 This course has two elements that you need to know.

 1. The video's, or episodes  will give you, support historical information on specific SF/X.

  2. The ILM book, which will give you information on current digital SF/X.

 Note: Many times the chapters required in the reading material will not correspond to the videos. Don't panic, just absorb as much info' as you can. The art form is moving at a very rapid pace. To keep up with as much current information we designed this course to supply you with a variety of SF/X modes, live action, models, digital and computer from the ILM book, blue and green screening etc.

  COURSE REQUIREMENTS

 BOOK: INDUSTRIAL LIGHT AND MAGIC: INTO THE DIGITAL REALM

 Online in the Weekly Viewing and Reading Assignments section (found in the Lessons Tab in Angel) you will be instructed what to read and/or view.

 Take notes on the book and videos

 

THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! YOUR 3 TESTS  WILL BE Online (dates in the Week to Week section) AND OPEN BOOK AND OPEN NOTES TESTS. THIS MEANS YOU MAY USE YOUR BOOK and the Videos AND NOTES DURING THE TESTING. IT IS CRUCIAL THAT YOU KEEP UP WITH THE READING THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER AND TAKE CLEAR NOTES.

 

 

 

Test Scores are graded as follows for Tests 1, 2 & 3

 

Total Possible Points = 45

45 - 40 = A

 

39 - 33 = B

 

32 - 23 = C

 

22 - 15 = D

 

14 or less = F

 Semester grades are calculated as follows:

 

Total Semester Points = 135

 

120 - 135 = A

 

99 - 119 = B

 

69 -  98 = C

 

45 -  68 = D

 

 44 or less = F

 TA19 Movie Magic 6 week

 Week 1

Orientation. This a time for you to orient yourself with Angel.

 All videos or Episodes or online for free! Check the Folder in Lessons and you can watch them on your computer.

 Watch Episode 1 Make-up F/X. Take plenty of notes.

 Watch Episode 2 Digital Domain and Read: Chaps 3, 6

Watch Episode 3 Blue and Green Screen F/X and Read: Chap 8,10,11 & Pgs 123-139

 

Week 2

This is TEST 1 week. Review your notes and Video’s up to now. There will be an open book and open notes Online test.

 You many log on to Angel and take the test any time during the week. However please note that once you log on to take the test you will have only 3 hours to take to complete the test.

 

 Week 3

Watch Episode 4 Animatronics and Read : Chap 4

Watch Episode 5 Underwater F/X and Read: Chap. 3 & Pgs 193-200

 Watch Episode 6 Scale Models and Read: Chap 9. Review Chap 3,4

 

Week 4 

 This is TEST 2 week. Review your notes and Videos up to now. There will be an open book and open notes Online test.

 

You many log on to Angel and take the test any time during the week. However please note that once you log on to take the test you will have only 3 hours to complete the test.

 Week 5

 Watch Episode 7 Computers and Read: Pgs132-140, Review Chap 6

Watch Episode 8 Miniatures/Digital and Read: Pgs107,284,285,37,50, Review Chap 9

Watch Episode 9 Movie Aliens and Read: Pgs 193-236, Review Chap 4

 

Week 6

This is TEST 3 week. Review your notes and Video’s up to now. There will be an open book and open notes Online test.

You many log on to Angel and take the test any time during the week. However please note that once you log on to take the test you will have only 3 hours to take to complete the test.

 

Extra Credit 15 points.  You may do Both if you wish

 SHORT RESEARCH PAPER: OR VIDEO EFFECT. Both worth 15 points.

 2.This short research paper 0r video is due week 6, before you take the final.

 Make sure you email it to me within Angel

 

A. Research and write a 2 page double spaced paper with the following requirements:

 

B. Choose a current movie, your choice. e.g. Captain America, Thor etc.

 

C. Choose one effect from that movie (e.g. digital F/X, Green screen, etc.)

 

D. Explain in technical terms the way the effect was accomplished Be specific. Note; you can go to the web or other sources to research the process of the effect. DO NOT EXPLAIN THE SCENE ~ I WANT TO KNOW HOW THEY ACCOMPLISHED THE EFFECT.

 

 OR

. Video, Create a computer ONLY effect that you post on You tube or can send me via quicktime. This needs to be a 30 sec to 2 minute NON VIOLENT effect. WARNING:  NO LIVE STUNTS OR LIVE EFFECTS ALLOWED. IF YOU SUBMIT A LIVE STUNT OR EFFECT INVOLVING A REAL PERSON YOU WILL FAIL  THE COURSE/ FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME WITH YOUR IDEAS 

 Email your short research paper OR the video to me within Angel, using Angel email (found under the communicate tab or directly to jamescallner@sbcglobal.net).  Write your paper in Microsoft Word and send it as an attachment.
