Welcome to Music 5: Music Fundamentals ONLINE !

In a very short time, you will have the opportunity to learn about the rudiments of music as it pertains to the music of Western Europe and the Americas. This course will prepare you to begin the study of harmony and counterpoint in a college music major curriculum; or may serve to help you understand and perform music you already encounter as a musician in a band, choir or orchestra; or it may help you make sense of those funny black spots on the page that you have yet to fathom.

In other words, no matter your level of expertise in music (aside from those who read, write and dictate music fluently), this class is meant for you!

To begin, you need the following materials:

• The CD-ROM, which is available as a shrink-wrapped package in the West Valley College Bookstore, or online: OnMusic Fundamentals. Published by Connect For Education, Inc., distributed by McGraw Hill.

BE SURE TO USE ONLY A NEW CD-ROM. USED CD's ARE WORTHLESS because the serial number which is necessary to take tests is good for one-time use ONLY. If the package is opened, don't buy it.

• Internet access. The faster the better, especially for the interactive listening player (Real Player or Shockwave) which you will need to download free and use with every listening example.

Once you have purchased the OnMusic Fundamentals CD-ROM, insert Disc 1 into your computer's CD-ROM drive. Click on the "Read Me" icon for instructions. Follow these instructions precisely and you will quickly be ready to begin.

PLEASE NOTE: Be sure to set your computer's CD preferences (probably found in System Preferences) so that when you insert the CD-ROM either Real Player or Shockwave will automatically open. That will enable instantaneous listening to music throughout the course.
