General Description: Bio 10- General Biology is a 4 unit course
accepted by both UC & Cal State University Systems. This
course is a general introduction to the world of biology that will
introduce you fundamental concepts in biology. The basic knowledge of
biology gained in this course will allow you to make educated decisions
about environmental & health related issues, as well as a variety
of other biological issues that will likely come up during your
life. The class consists of both lecture and laboratory
components. The Lectures will introduce you to the principles of
biology while labs are designed to reinforce lecture material by using
interactive experiments. The Lab component will account for 25% of your
total grade for the course. Thus, active participation in lab is
a must!
Conduct: Disruptive conduct in lecture and lab is unacceptable. This
includes late arrivals, disruptive talk, passing notes, ringing cell
phones, pagers and ipod use. Disruptive students will be asked to leave
and will lose participation points. Continued disruptive behavior will
result in disciplinary action
Attendance: Attendance is mandatory for student success. It is the
student’s responsibility to attend ALL classes and labs, classes will
start on time and will run the entire time; schedule doctor
appointments, dental appointments, baby sitters etc. accordingly. If
you are absent for any reason, please notify me as soon as possible. If
a student misses a lecture or lab, it is his/her responsibility to
obtain any handouts and information provided. Again, if a student is
absent from more than four class sessions he/she will be DROPPED from
the course.
Withdrawing from the Course: Anyone not present in the beginning of the
semester will be dropped. After the first class it is the
responsibility of the student who registered to withdraw, even if
he/she has stopped attending class. Do not assume that if you
stop coming to class that you will automatically be dropped. Students
who fail to attend but do not inform the instructor and officially drop
the course will receive a failing grade.
Websites: This course will have active website pages which can be used
to review lecture and lab schedule and general class policies
throughout the semester. Each week students will be responsible for
visiting the general Bio10 webpage to download & print pre-lab
assignments due in lab. The lecture section also has a webpage designed
to provide students information relevant to the lecture section only.
Instructor’s syllabus with polices and lecture powerpoint presentations
will be made available to students weekly. These materials are highly
beneficial to focusing your study time and if used properly will aid in
your success in this course. Please keep in mind these resources are a
privilege and not a right and may be discontinued at the instructor’s
discretion.
Course Format:
Lecture Format: Lecture will account for 75% of your total course
grade. Lectures will be used to present, clarify, and expand on
information which is presented in your book and laboratory manual.
Although we will follow a typical lecture format, class participation
and involvement is encouraged. If, during lecture, you have a question
raise your hand and I will try to answer when appropriate. Otherwise
please do not talk during lecture– it is disruptive to me and your
fellow students! You do not need to bring your text to class, however,
it will be to your benefit to have it available. You are required to
know all of the information presented in the class lectures whether the
material is in the text or not.
Lab Format: The points you earn in lab will account for 25% of your
grade. Laboratory scores are typically based on three things; quizzes,
pre-labs, and lab reports. Although the precise nature of the lab
evaluations may vary somewhat between lab instructors, lab scores will
count towards 25% of your course grade. Warning: failure of the lab
will automatically result in failure of the course.
Academic Integrity: Academic integrity is MANDATORY. The college policy
on cheating is clearly spelled out in the college catalogue and will be
strictly enforced. Use of any method other than your knowledge
and memory (such as notes, looking on other students papers,
communication between students, etc.) to answer questions on an exam or
quiz constitutes cheating and will result in failure of that exam or
quiz. Dishonest behavior also includes: cheating, tampering,
fabrication, plagiarism, and assisting (see course webpage “handout”
folder for more details). Therefore, be proactive; keep your work to
yourself and be sure that all work (papers and presentations) is in
your own and in your own words- this includes group activities.
Summaries and reports must be completed individually. Any student
caught exhibiting dishonest behavior will be appropriately reprimanded.
All dishonest behavior will be reported to the Vice president of
Student Services and will undergo review by the Disciplinary Action
Committee. Resulting disciplinary action may include one or more of the
following; academic probation, suspension, expulsion from the district
colleges, and academic dishonesty transcript notation.
Due to several incidents of cheating very strict testing procedures
will be enforced!
1. Students will NOT be allowed to leave the room for any reason once
the exam has been administered. This includes: using the restroom,
answering cell phones, etc.
2. If you must leave the room you must turn in your exam and forfeit
your remaining time. I will only grade the portion of the exam that you
have completed.
3. Be on time! Once the first person leaves the exam room, no one
arriving late will be allowed to start the exam.
4. All notes, books, and personal belongings will be either left
outside the room or stored in the front of the lecture hall.
5. Cell phones/pagers must be turned off during the exam and placed in
backpacks or purses. Ringing cell phones and/or pagers during exams may
result in failure of the exam. If you must leave your phone on during
an exam please switch it to silent mode. If, for any reason, you answer
a cell phone or pager during an exam you must turn in your exam and
forfeit your remaining time.
6. Absolutely NO talking will be allowed during the exam.
7. Assigned seating will be utilized for examinations.
8. Absolutely no papers (other than those provided by the instructor)
are allowed on or around the student’s workspace.
9. Cheating will result in a zero on the exam and probable expulsion
from the class.
If circumstance precludes you from adhering to these policies you must
speak to your instructor PRIOR to the exams.
Special Accommodations: If you have a learning or physical need that
will require special accommodations in this class you will need to
notify me in writing of your accommodation needs. Please notify me
following the first class if you require any special accommodations for
learning or physical impairments. This will allow me to best meet your
needs and allow us ample opportunity to provide suitable
accommodations. West Valley College makes reasonable accommodations for
persons with documented disabilities. College materials will be
available in alternate formats (Braille, audio, electronic format, or
large print) upon request. Please contact the Disability and
Educational Support Program at (408) 741-2010 (voice) or (408) 741-2658
(TTY) for assistance.
Safety: Student safety in the class is a primary concern. Instructions
for laboratory safety are outlined in your lab manual. You will be
instructed to read and sign this safety sheet after reviewing this
material during lab 2. In order to be safe, all students should be
familiar with their surroundings. You should know the location of the
first aid kit, fire extinguisher, eye wash, and nearest emergency
phone. In the event of an emergency which requires the evacuation of
the building (earthquake or fire), we will exit the building through
the outside door and walk to parking lot #2. In this event you MUST
remain with the instructor.
Study Time: For each hour spent in class, students should expect to
spend at least 2 to 3 hours outside of class studying in order to
achieve an average grade (C). (Note this estimate is for the average
student to earn an average grade for this class is 6 – 9 hours per
week!) You should find yourself studying, reviewing and preparing for
class and lab each day of the week!
Note: Be careful not to confuse quantity studying with quality study.
Simply spending time with
your books and materials will not earn you a better grade. Only hours
of directed, motivated
studying will work toward earning you a better grade! As you
instructor, I am here to facilitate
your learning by presenting the material and assisting in your
understanding. I will do as much
as I can to help you, but ultimately it is you who will earn your final
grade!
Evaluation:
Participation:30 pts Participation will be evaluated through attendance
records and participation & performance in class. Some ways in
which to lose participation points are: 1) missing class; 2) arriving
late or leaving early; 3) violation of class procedures; 4) leaving
classroom in disarray or dirty; 5) demonstration of continued lack of
preparation for class; 6) failure to complete class activities; and 7)
disruptive behavior in class.
Quizzes: Quizzes will account for a total of 50 pts (10 pts each).
Lecture quizzes will be given at the beginning of the class only. SO BE
ON TIME TO CLASS!! Pop quizzes may be given at any time during the
lecture. There are no make-up quizzes.
Homework: A variety of assignments will be given throughout the
semester will account for a total of 20pts towards your lecture grade.
Extra Credit: Sorry, no extra credit assignments.
Late Work: Late work is not tolerated. Assignments will not be accepted
late and quizzes can only be taken at the beginning of lecture. There
are no make-up quizzes.
Exams: 4 exams (100 pts ea) & 1 Final exam (125pts) will comprise
the bulk of the student’s lecture points. Students are responsible for
all material presented in lecture, whether it can be found in the text
or not. The exams will consist of a combination of multiple choice,
matching, short answer, and labeling questions. Attendance of scheduled
exams is mandatory. There are NO make-up exams. Failure to attend an
exam may result in an incomplete grade for the course. Exams scores
will not be dropped or substituted. Exams will begin promptly at the
beginning of lecture. Please arrive on time and note that you will not
receive extra time to compensate a late arrival. All students must take
the final exam during the assigned time period. Note: Please write
legibly- my standard policy is if I can’t read it, it’s wrong!
Grade Calculations:
A single 4- unit grade will be given for the entire course (lecture and
lab). The lecture component accounts for 75% of your total course
grade. All points earned in lecture section will be converted into a
percentage score (pts earned ÷ pts possible) and combined with
your percentage score from lab (25%) to calculate your final grade.

*If complications in projects cause assignments to be discontinued or
if additional assignments are given, the percent scale of the adjusted
points will be used to calculate grades.
The percentage of the total points possible that you earn in the
lecture will be combined with your laboratory percentage to determine
your course grade as follows:
(0.75 x lec percent) + (0.25 x lab percent) = course percentage
Example: assume you earn 72% of the possible points in lecture and 88%
in lab.
(0.75 x 72%) + (0.25 x 88%) = 54% + 22% = 76% ("C")
Note: because the lecture is weighted more heavily than the lab, your
lecture score will more closely approximate your final grade
Your final course grade will be based on the
following scale:
A (90-100%), B (80-89%), C
(65-79%), D (55-65%), F (below 55%)

Description:
Bio 10 consists of both lecture and laboratory components. The Lab
component will account for 25% of your grade for the course. The
Lab section will reinforce lecture material using interactive
experiments. Thus, active participation in lab is a must.
Course Design:
Each week lab will cover one or more topics that will mirror lecture
material. Class will begin with a quiz that covers material from the
previous week’s lab and/or pre-lab assignment. Pre-lab assignments will
be due at the beginning of class. These assignments are available
weekly from the Bio 10 webpage
(http://instruct.westvalley.edu/svensson/B10main.html).
Following the quiz a general discussion of the concepts to be explored,
procedures to be used, and safety precautions will be given. Students
are responsible for completing the weekly laboratory report in class to
receive credit for the lab. The lab report MUST be turned in to the
instructor to receive credit.
Texts:
Required: Biology 10 Laboratory Manual 5th edition.
Required: Quiz Scantron form 815-E

Lab Conduct:
- Disruptive conduct in lab is unacceptable. This includes late
arrivals, disruptive talk, passing notes, ringing cell phones, pagers
and ipod use. Disruptive students will be asked to leave and will lose
participation points. Continued disruptive behavior will result in
disciplinary action.
-Attendance is mandatory. Students are responsible for contacting me in
advance if they are unable to attend class.
-Up to 3 labs may be made up by attending an alternate lab section
(during the same week) if seats are available. Switching labs must be
pre approved by BOTH lab instructors in advance.
-If 4 or more labs are missed and NOT made up you will be dropped from
the course.
Grades:
The laboratory component accounts for 25% of your total course grade.
All points earned in lab section will be converted into a percentage
score (pts earned ÷ pts possible) and combined with your
percentage score from lecture to calculate your final grade. There are
a total of 335 pts assigned to the laboratory section. Grades will be
assigned as follows:
A 90-100%

Pre-lab Assignments:
Pre-lab assignments are designed to help you prepare for lab. When
completed with careful thought and effort, the lab will proceed more
smoothly, with less errors and confusion. You will be responsible for
the material on the pre-lab each week and part of your weekly quiz will
cover this material. Pre-labs must be turned in at the beginning of the
lab section to receive credit. Pre-labs must be in your own words-
COPYING is considered CHEATING and all parties involved will receive a
zero grade.
3 pts All questions answered with correct, thorough, and well
thought out responses
2 pts Most questions answered with correct, thorough, and well
thought out responses

and well thought out responses
6 pts All questions answered with correct, thorough,
and well thought out responses (1 or 2 mistakes)
5 pts Most questions answered with correct, thorough,
and well thought out responses (3 or 4 mistakes or 1 or 2 unanswered
questions)
4 pts Most questions answered with correct, thorough,
and well thought out responses (5 to 9 mistakes or 3 or 4 unanswered
questions)
3 pts Most questions answered but with many
incorrect or wrong answers
2 pts Most questions answered but with many
incorrect or wrong answers (5 to 7 unanswered questions)
1 pt At least half of the questions answered with
mostly correct answers
0 pts Less than half of the questions answered
Quizzes:
A multiple choice quiz worth 15 pts and Quizzes will be given at the
beginning of each lab only- So BE ON TIME! There will be no make-up
quizzes. Quizzes will cover material from the previous lab and from the
pre-lab for that day. The lowest quiz grade for the semester will
be dropped.
Late Work:
Late work is not tolerated. Pre-labs will not be accepted late and
