Netherlandish Art
Fast Facts
Religious controversy and general unrest dominated society in the Netherlands. As the Catholic Church lost its hold and their commissions lessened, artists increasingly served private patrons. As people clashed with the Inquisition, they looked for direction and religious alternatives in such groups such as the Adamites. The artists' new patrons commissioned images of moral lessons and warnings against the deadly sins incorporated into pictures of daily life.
