OBJECTIVE:

To develop a basic understanding of accounting procedures and financial reporting for partnerships, corporations, and manufacturing organizations and to learn the basic concepts of managerial accounting.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:  Students will be able to apply their knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles to record economic events and prepare four financial statements for a corporate organization engaged in merchandising or manufacturing operations and to interpret and analyze the contents of the annual report of a publicly held corporation engaged in merchandising or manufacturing operations including horizontal, vertical, and ratio analysis.  Students will also apply their knowledge of cost behaviors to prepare the numerical analyses required by managers in performing their planning, directing, and motivating and control functions.

HOMEWORK:

Accounting is best learned through the solving of accounting problems. There will be a significant amount of homework each week. If you cannot make the commitment to do the homework, you should consider dropping the course and taking it when you can. Completion of the homework is absolutely necessary for success in this course. If you don't attempt the homework on your own, YOU WILL NOT PASS THIS COURSE. Each assigned homework problem will be reviewed in class via recorded homework lectures on Angel.

At the WileyPLUS website, click on "Assignments".  A listing of the assignments (exercises and problems only) for each chapter from the text will be displayed.  Do the exercises and problems on-line.  There are also questions assigned that appear in the back of each chapter that must be answered.  The assigned questions are noted on the last page of this syllabus.  The exercises and problems that are listed on this page as well are there for reference only and are the exercises and prblems that are in Wiley.  The homework will be due on the dates noted in the course calendar in Angel.  Please ignore the due date listed in Wiley.  The date that is there is an administrative date and is the last day of the semester.  Having this date in Wiley enables students to go back and review their homework any time during the course.  However, the homework is due the date noted on the course calendar. Recorded homework reviews will be made available the dat after rthe homework is due on Angel.

In addition, there will be a team assignment related to chapter 18 (this is the only assignment related to chapter 18) that will be given to you at a later date.  It will involve the formation of teams, the financial analysis of a publicly traded company, and a written report to be submitted.

I have recorded lectures for each of the chapters.  These recorded lectures can be found under the lessons tab.

EXAMS:

A total of 5 exams (excluding the final exam) are scheduled for the course.  Each exam will cover 2-3 chapters and will consist of a series of accounting problems related to the chapters being tested.  Each exam will be worth 100-150 points.  Please note the dates that each exam will be available to take and will be due.  No late exam will be accepted.  I will grade the exams quickly and will notify you when I have completed the grading via an Angel e-mail. Shortly thereafter, I will provide you the answers to the exam so you can compare your work.

You have a number of options available to you to submit the completed exam.  The preferred method of submission is for you to attach your answers done in Word or Excel to an Angel e-mail sent to me.  You may also deliver it in person to my office hard copy.  You may scan it to me using an Angel e-mail or you can fax it to me at 408-741-2127.  If you choose the fax route, be sure to put my name on the cover page of the first page of the fax. If none of these work for you, you must inform me of how you intend to turn in your exams.

The final exam is comprehensive and will be similar to the mid-terms but longer.  It will cover all of the important topics in the ourse.  Please see Student Learning Outcomes for what you will be requiredto demonstrate knowledge of.  Once again, please reviews the course calendar for the schedule for the final.
