MIDTERM REVIEW SHEET

HISTORY 17B ONLINE

WINTER

AVAILABILITY:  The Midterm will be available FRIDAY, JANUARY 16 through SUNDAY, JANUARY 18 (until 11:55 pm PST).  Once you start the midterm, you must finish it within 55 minutes.

IMPORTANT TIPS

Once you start the exam, you MUST COMPLETE it within 55 minutes (i.e., you may not "pause" it and come back to it later.)

Let me stress that it's really important for you to study for this exam rather than hoping you can just look the answers up in the book when you see what questions you are asked. The essay questions are written in a way that if you try and look them up, you're going to be wasting valuable time that you could be using to answer those questions.

ALL ANSWERS MUST BE IN YOUR OWN WORDS.  Lifting sentences and or paragraphs out of the book/lectures will result in an AUTOMATIC FAILURE FOR THE TEST (no matter how small the infraction. Plagiarism is not allowed in this course).

Some students like to write up answers to all of the essay questions BEFORE the test and then cut and paste them into the answer box when they find out what questions the system gives them.  This is definitely more work, but it is a great way to prepare.

Two of the following questions will appear on your test.  These questions will be 115 points each and will be graded on the basis of the coherence of your answer and the relevant examples you provide from the lectures and readings.  To answer any of these questions, summarize and compare and contrast (when appropriate) the main points of the historic terms in the question.  An "excellent answer" would also offer your own viewpoint as to the significance of these historic events.  (115 pts each)

Many students ask me how long these answers should be.  While I will not be counting words, a general guide for you to follow if you were to write this in a large blue book in an on-campus course is AT LEAST two pages .  What's most important, however, is that you answer the question fully and in as much detail as you can.

  1. Compare and contrast Conservative Racism and Radical Racism in the South after the Civil War.  Which of these ideologies do the "plantation tradition" and "Birth of a Nation" fit into, and why?
  2. Individualism was a powerful ideology in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  Define it and explain how both the "Gospel of Wealth" and "Social Darwinism" fit into this ideology.
  3. Compare and contrast the Knights of Labor, the American Federation of Labor, and the Industrial Workers of the World.  How did they differ in their recruitment of members and their stated goals?
  4. What is the Agrarian Myth, and how was it central to the fueling of the Populist Movement in the late 19th century?  Explain the goals and success and/or failure of this movement.
  5. Define and explain the conflict between urban and rural America.  Why did rural Americans feel so threatened by urban Americans in the late 19th century, and how do we see this conflict continue into the 1920s between Modernists and Traditionalists?
  6. What are the differences between Old Immigrants and New Immigrants?  Why did the latter faces so much more opposition from Nativist Americans than did the former?
  7. What are "Paper Sons" and which immigrant group made the most frequent use of this method in gaining entry into the U.S.?  Why did they have to, and what kind of discrimination did they continue to face?
  8. "Progressives were among the most Radical reformers of the twentieth century because of their efforts to overturn capitalism."  Do you agree or disagree with this statement?  Justify your answers with specific examples.
  9. "The Stock Market Crash in 1929 caused the Great Depression."  Do you agree or disagree with this statement?  Justify your answer with specific examples.  (Warning:  there is a right and wrong answer to this question!)
  10. What are the differences between Roosevelt's First Deal and Second New Deal?  Did they have different goals?  Different strategies?  What did they accomplish?

This test is worth 230 points.

Make-up Procedures

"Make-ups" will only be allowed when a Doctor's note (with an official contact phone number) is presented to the Instructor.  Make-up exams will consist of an alternate format (3 essay questions - no multiple choice) and must be taken IN PERSON during the Instructor's office hours on campus.  There are no exceptions to this rule.

GOOD LUCK!
