Founder, Diversity Project 2000 and Beyond

Present-1991
Founder, director and co-director of a nationally sponsored project which aims to increase the number of undergraduate ethnic minority honor students majoring in psychology through mentoring and leadership activities at the local, regional, and national levels. This project is also expected to increase the rate of transfer of ethnic minority community college students into four-year institutions, graduate schools and the health services. Funded as a contractor by the APA.

Diversity Project 2000 and Beyond is a cooperative effort of the

Office of Ethnic Minority Affairs of the American Psychological Association (APA).

LOCAL LEVEL

Founding Coordinator, Honors University Transfer Program - West Valley College

1991-1989
Founding Honors Program Coordinator, West Valley College; the first Northern California community college honors program accepted into the UCLA Transfer Alliance, which provides honors program graduates with priority consideration into impacted programs in the College of Letters and Science. Additional alliances have been established with USC, UCSC, and Pepperdine University.

The West Valley College Honors University Transfer Program was established to encourage the creative and intellectual development of high ability students at the community college level. The program offers an alternative curriculum model which ensures course enrichment and fosters an environment of academic excellence and advanced critical thinking. The Honors Program is the best example of exceptional training and vision that West Valley College offers (Honors Program Brochure, 1990).

Responsibilities included the development and initial implementation of the following:

• Innovative curriculum model involving coordinating teaching in teams.

• Documents to include philosophy statement, brochures, annual reports, faculty handbook, university portfolios, 3-year plan for the College Council, etc.

• High school and student recruitment for the Honors Program; identification and recruitment of high ability students, admission, educational planning, records.

• Academic orientations for enrolled honors students.

• Training of academic counseling staff.

• University alliance proposals with UC, CSU, and private universities.

• Disqualification and provisional status; assessment of student performance.

• Articulation of honors courses with UC and CSU.

• Staffing and scheduling honors sections.

• Supervising curriculum development and change.

• Coordinating faculty evaluation procedures.

• Submitting program evaluation reports.

• Evaluating student records at all stages of the Honors Program, including screening and selection criteria, program performance, retention and disqualification.

• Program management including the development of policies and procedures.

• Chairing the Honors Program Faculty Committee; supervising the modification of goals and objectives

• Preparing the budget.

 

Coordinator, Cognitive Neuroscience and Behavior Laboratory (CNB Lab)

2004-1975
Coordinator of the CNB Lab - Responsible for development and implementation of a computerized psychophysiology laboratory which introduces students to the theory and application of the scientific method in the area of psychophysiology. This pioneering Experimental Psychology Laboratory has been a model for other community colleges in the state of California because Experiment Psycholophysiology (Psych 2) is the only course in a psychology department in California that transfer in the Biological Laboratory Science Category for both UC and CSU.
