What to expect with an On-line Course:   All lessons, assignments, exams, etc. will be completed via a program called ANGEL.  Students enrolled in this course have free access to the ANGEL program and it can be accessed from any computer that is hooked up to the Internet.  In order to successfully complete this course, you should plan your schedule very carefully and try to stick to it.

Be sure to review the links below listed under "How do you know if taking On-line courses are right for you?" and "Additional considerations for On-line courses."

How do you know if taking an On-line course is right for you?

IMPORTANT: To determine if on-line learning is right for you, review the following 2 links:

"Are Distance Learning Courses Right for You?" Click here to take the distance learning skills survey.  (This will help you determine if distance learning is right for you.  First read the entire document.  Second, be sure to take the "Distance Learning Successful Skills Survey" which is the very last part of the document)

"How to Succeed in an On-line Course?" Click here to read about how to succeed in distance learning courses.  (Read the entire document which includes great tips on how to succeed in an on-line course.)

Prerequisites for On-line courses: Very Important

#1: Students should have computer skills to take on-line courses. This includes being proficient in being able to navigate computer programs, use the internet, send / receive "Word" document  file attachments, and send and receive e-mail.  If you have not mastered these skill, you may want to consider taking a computer class prior to taking an on-line course or have someone assist you in learning these skills.  Unfortunately, on-line courses are not designed to provide basic computer instruction.  However, there is an extensive "Help Menu" in the ANGEL program which can assist you.  Contact a college Academic Counselor if you need information regarding the computer classes that are offered at West Valley College.)

#2: Students should have the skills of college level reading, college level writing, and mastery of test taking skills.  Study skills are also important because on-line students must study independently, follow the on-line assignments, and read the accompanying textbooks.  If you have difficulty in any of these areas you may want to consider looking into the variety of 'basic skills" courses offered here at West Valley College (Study Skills, Reading Comprehension, Basic Writing, College Success Skills, etc.).

#3 Students must have a reliable computer and reliable on-line internet access. Click the link below for information on Browser Issues and Hardware Requirements.

HOW TO START THE summer 2008 COURSE

Enrolled students are responsible for logging in to the ANGEL program during the first Week of the semester and starting the course.

Please note:  It is the students responsibility to log in to the ANGEL program during the first week of the semester and starting the course.

The instructions for logging into the ANGEL program are explained below.

HOW TO LOGIN TO AN angel COURSE

Read carefully

If you are taking an online course that utilizes the Angel Learning course management system, you will not have access to the server until the first day of the semester.  After the semester begins, you will be able to login in to Angel by using your username and password

Your login username consists of following:

  • All seven digits of your student ID number (Please note: this is not your social security number)

Your student ID number is generated by the computer at the college after you apply for admission for the first time and is included with all of the paperwork you may have received from the college.  You should also be able to get your college student ID number through Web Advisor.  If you have not applied for admission to the college yet, you must do so first before you may receive your student ID number.

Your password is your six digit birth date.

  • So if you were born on December 14, 1980, your password would be 121480
  • Single digits must have a 0 in front of them
  • So if you were born on May 9, 1977, your password would be 050977

Now that you have determined your log in name and password, Angel may be accessed through the following login page:

http://wvmccd.angellearning.com

Please note that the entire process that has been explained above is also explained on the ANGEL Login page and can be found at the following link:  http://www.westvalley.edu/dl/angel_login.html

Still having problems logging on to Angel?

If you are still having problems logging on to Angel for a West Valley College online course, please be aware that it is may be a problem with the seven digit number you are using as part of your username. Your student ID number is generated by the computer at the college and is included with all of the paperwork you may have received from the college.

If you absolutely can't find any paperwork with this number on it or you never received any paperwork in the first place, please contact the the college Admissions and Records office (408-741-2001).
