II. Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of the course the student will be able to:
1) perform the kicks, punches, blocks, and stances used in sport
kick boxing
2) perform competition sparring rounds within the framework of
the class
3) demonstrate effective combative strategies
4) describe the rules of kick boxing
5) demonstrate the traditional philosophies employed in martial
arts
6) perform the falls, sweeps, and throws of Lei Tai Kickboxing
III. Classroom Procedures:
The class will include the following:
1. Traditional bow-in procedures
2. Warm-up exercises and stretching
3. Strengthening exercises (sit-ups and push-ups)
4. Cardio-respiratory exercises including running and jump rope
5. Kicking, punching and blocking
6. Stance-work, ducking, weaving, bobbing, feinting, parrying, and
evading
7. Practice kicking and punching into training focus bags
8. Sparring rounds with partners (minimal or non-contact rounds)
9. Falling, sweeps, and throws
Supplies Recommended:
Clothing and work-out gear must allow for freedom of movement and flexibility.
Kick-boxing style shorts and shirts are recommended. Nylon bicycle
shorts underneath kick-boxing shorts are also recommended. No shoes will
be worn except during running sessions. Sparring equipment (boxing
gloves, padded feet, mouthpiece, and head protection) is required for students
during all sparring sessions. All male students are required to wear
an athletic groin protector.
Grading:
Student may opt for a CR/NC instead of a grade.
50 points - Class teaching project
50 points - Sparring rounds and practical final exam
100 points - Participation
200 points - Total
A = 175 to 200 points CR = 125 to 200 points
B = 150 to 174 points NC = below 125 points
C = 125 to 149 points
D = 100 to 124 points
F = below 100 points
Policy:
It is expected that the student will attend all or most of the training
sessions. New skills are constantly being learned. Learned
skills build onto new skills and a gradual progression is formed.
A period of missed sessions will hinder the ability to develop the necessary
skills for advancement. Communicate any problems of an anticipated
missed period of training sessions with the instructor. You will
be automatically dropped after a series of 4 missed sessions.
