Prerequisites: CA 10 (keyboarding), 20 (intro to Mac) or CA 70 (Windows PC intro) recommended
Class Times: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:55 AM - 12:20 PM plus 2.0 weekly hours by arrangement

Catalog description: This course focuses on the uses of Adobe InDesign for document layout and design. Students have the opportunity to learn how to integrate text, graphics, and photographs to create a variety of professional quality finished documents for practical and business use. This course is WVC degree and certificate applicable. Credit/ No Credit option.

Course Objective: The student will demonstrate competency with the basic and advanced uses of Adobe InDesign desktop publishing software by creating a variety of finished documents that incorporate the integration of text and graphics.
Course Content:
Document and column set up for a variety of publications
Use of rulers, guides, and snap-to guides
Formatting type including styles, sizes, leading, tracking, kerning
Using the edit menu - cutting, copying, pasting
Multiple pasting, editing stories, spell checking
Formatting paragraphs, moving/resizing text blocks, leading adjustment etc.
Placing graphics, resizing graphics, text wraps
Setting up templates and style palettes
Grouping and aligning objects, multiple pasting with "step and repeat" functions
Graphic formats, links, resolutions
Color, color libraries and color separation
Bi-fold brochures and other custom layouts
Rotation tool, drop caps, page numbering, and insertion of special symbols
Styles and creating a custom style palette, use of templates
Printing solutions and PPD's and PDF's
Principles of design
Instructional format: 3 hours of class time each week including demonstrations, lecture, and/or critique. 2 hours of individual weekly hours by arrangement. Hands-on experience with computers and InDesign software.
Grades: Letter grades will be assigned unless a student submits a written request for a credit/no credit grade. The following criteria will be used:
Class projects - 70%
Final Project/Exam - 20%
Attendance - 10%
Note: All late assignments will be automatically reduced one grade.
Withdrawal: If you find that for unforeseen circumstances you have to drop the course, remember that withdrawal is not an automatic process. It is the student's sole responsibility. Contact the Admissions and Records office for a DROP slip and have the instructor sign it. Please read the DROP procedures carefully to avoid unnecessary grade penalties.
