| Photography has been
an important part of my life since I was about five years old. I was
given a camera for my birthday and I began to record interesting aspects
of the world around me. I graduated in photography in 1970 from San
Jose State University and quickly went to work as a professional commercial/industrial
photographer. In 1972 I also started teaching photography at the college
level but have always continued to work in the field to keep abreast
of current trends and techniques. I earned my Masters degree in 1976
and began full time employment at West Valley College shortly thereafter.
I continue to teach photography and graphics/computer related courses
along with my assignment as Distance Learning Coordinator.
Even though most of my commercial work continues to be in the area of color photography, most of the images I take for my own enjoyment are black and white. Creative darkroom techniques as well as added emphasis on composition, tonal quality, and precise exposure/development control all add to the personal satisfaction I attain when working within the world of black and white imagery. This passion is also reflected in my teaching techniques as students learn to incorporate a balanced mix of theory and creativity in their photographic experiences. Photography can be a tremendous outlet for creativity and personal expression, but it is also very important to learn the basics of the many "how's and why's" of photography. |
