Course Description

Survey of Western Art 1A - Online is an academic Art History course designed to provide you with the opportunity to learn the general styles, concepts, purposes, and interpretations of Western Art from Prehistory through the Middle Ages. Artistic styles will be explored in relationship to man's social history, thoughts, needs and beliefs. The focus will be on architecture, sculpture, and to a lesser degree, on painting. As this is a survey class our goal is to obtain a broad overview of artistic movements as well as a broad understanding and appreciation of Art History but also to find ways to make the art of other centuries come alive through reflection and interaction. This course meets online only. There are no sessions on campus. This distance learning course is conducted completely via the Internet, e-mail, and telephone conversation

Grading Policy
There are 5 components to the class:
1) Assignments that are graded by completion BUT help you to pass the quizzes.
2) Quizzes
3) BLOGS that must be done weekly, but will be graded at the end of the class
4) Museum Visit
5) Research Paper from Museum Visit

Guidelines to the 5 components:
1) each chapter will have its own folder under LESSONS, under each assignment you will be responsible for the notes and images, terms, homework and/or activities that are created for that chapter. Each activity is graded by completion only BUT each activity prepares you for the upcoming quiz. This is worth 20 points

2) Each quiz is available for 7 days only. It consists of 20 questions available for 30 minutes. The questions are multiple choice or fill in the blanks. Once you open the quiz you CANNOT close it and retake it again . You can only take the quiz once. Once it is opened it must be completed as that will be the grade you receive. There will be NO MAKEUPS so please be aware of all quiz deadlines. The deadline will be 11:55 pm of the last night. This is worth 150 points

3) Blogs – you must create a blog and create one entry every week. You may receive a blog topic assignment (this will be announced) or you may have an open-ended reflective blog (if there is no specific one announced that week). BUT your blog MUST have something to do with a specific art piece or a specific chapter you read about or relate somehow to your everyday life and the art we are discussing at that specific time in the class. There will be about 10 people in your "team" - YOU MUST post comments in your group members' blogs as well. The objective of this is to have you digest and reflect about the art in the books and see how it relates somehow, someway to your own everyday life in the 21st century. Because IT DOES! ... if it doesnÕt you are not doing what you should be doing. You will need to publish your blog address to your class. This is worth 50 points

4) Museum Visit
You must visit the Canter Museum, the Legion of Honor or De Young Museum. Proof of your attendance will be a photo of you in the museum which you will upload and submit with your paper. Use your cell phone or a digital camera. Without this, your paper will be worth only 35 points maximum.

5) Your museum paper will be at least three pages, 10 font- double spaced, with footnotes and a bibliography done in Turabian Style (Turabian style guide is under resources). This is worth 50 points

No whining is allowed in this class.
Expect to be misunderstood, expect to be confused at the beginning and at other times as well...it is a dynamic system  without the benefit of face-to-face confrontation. Therefore, there will be many crisises but be rest assured that I will abate them. Whining and complaining merely contributes to class chaos and an unproductive environment to exist in ...if you are a complainer I would highly recommend you not take this course.
