Course
Description: In this telecourse, you will analyze
the various schools of management
thought and draw conclusions regarding their application in today's work
environment. You will have an opportunity to learn
skills in the application of quality management regarding planning, organizing, staffing, and
controlling. You also will have
the opportunity to understand and apply corporate responsibilities, conflicts,
and resolutions based on today's business environmental structure. This telecourse has the
Credit/No Credit option.

Upon completion of
this course, you should be able

Understand the nature
and context of the Management Functions in the U.S. Business world.
Comprehend the nature
of conflicts within the workplace and develop strategies for resolving these
conflicts.
Understand the essence of management functions , operations and the role
that planning, organizing, staffing, and controlling play in a corporate
structure.
Articulate the
relationship between ethic business practices and success within the
management function.

ODD-NUMBERED "video
viewing questions" contained in
the Video Viewing Guide in each text lesson (1-26 only—2000 pts each
given) are due on the day of the final exam . (VIDEO viewing questions begin on
page 6. See course
outline on the next page for specific directions for completing this portion of
the assignments. (52,000 points
possible).
No late papers can be
accepted after 7 p.m. on Wednesday, MAY 22, 2008 at 5 p.m. Regarding examinations,

missing either the midterm or the final exam will be given automatic
INC's (I-F) for the semester and
it will be their responsibility to make arrangements to make up the work the
following semester. Incompletes
not cleared within one year translate into an F grade.
If you cannot complete the work required in this class, you should
drop the class; Dr. Schock will not drop you; that is your responsibility.
Grading Policy—Summary
You are to turn in
HARD COPIES (NOTE—no computer floppy disks or e-mail transmissions OR attachments will be accepted—sorry) of the 26
video viewing lessons at the beginning of the final examination meeting SORRY, NO LATE PAPERS
ACCEPTED. All written assignments MUST BE YOUR OWN WORK. Absolutely NO credit will be
given for duplicate work. Examples of completed assignments are in my office
(J) should you wish to look at a correctly completed example from previous
semesters. All work should
be placed in a folder that opens like a book with a cover label on the outside
of the folder ( no less than 5 by 7 inches in size with your name, my name
spelled correctly, and the listing of the assignments you are turning in. (note: the card should be placed on the
folder so that the 7 inch part of the card is parallel with top of the 8.5 inch
folder). Again, you're welcome to
come to Dr. Schock's office to see
samples of correctly prepared folders and reports.
70 percent of your semester grade will be based on the two examinations you take. 30 percent of your semester grade will be based on the other assignments. A class curve method will be used in assigning midterm and semester grades.
5 REQUIRED INTERNET
ASSIGNMENTS—SPRING 2008
There are only five
required Internet assignments in this class; the Internet assignments are due
on the day you take the final examination.
How do you complete
the Internet Assignments? Make a
title or cover page as follows and place in your semester folder: (remember the outside label must be 5
by 7 inches as outlined earlier in this course outline. If you choose to do any extra
credit work, it must be in a separate RED folder with proper labels, etc. If you have completed less than
the 5 required assignments, then list only the ones you completed. You should print out two pages of the site (other than the webpage)
and also include a minimum of a two page
summary page of your personal
conclusions and evaluations of the sight you chose. Margins on all pages should be should
be 1 inch all around, and double spacing.
Therefore, the total papers submitted will be 4 times 5 equals 20 pages
plus one title page listing all five items. To receive full credit on your summary page, it
must FILL the entire page. Remember, two summary pages for each assignment are
expected. One and a half page
report is not acceptable and will lose points. Labels should be placed with the long side horizontal
to the top of the folder.

#4—Look up a female leader (like the recent CEO of Hewlett Packard) and
write about her.
- Assignment
#5—look up ANY subject listed in your textbook table of contents and
write about that subject.

Remember this: you are to print out TWO pages of the
site and type a minimum of 2 pages
in your own words of what you found at each site. You may complete up to four pages on
each report. Use no font bigger or smaller than 12 pt. Dr. Schock prefers Palatino or Bookman
or similar fonts in the paper.
That's all there is to it.
You should double space and have one inch margins all aroundÉ..remember,
there should be a one inch bottom margin, too. Call or e-mail me if you have questions OR once again, come
by to see examples of successfully completed work. To receive full credit, you must have margins of 1 inch all
around and double spacing with 12 pitch font. You must
fill the entire page with your comments to the bottom 1 inch margin if you want full credit. One-half page or three quarter of a
page report is not acceptable for full credit.
There will be 20,000
pts possible (4,000 pts. each times 5 equals 20,000 pts.) for these correctly
completed assignments. Please note
that five points will be deducted
for no title page, 1000 points will be deducted for no summary and 1000 points
will be deducted if the web site is unidentified or a header is missing or if
there is no printed support material for the website. SO, if you follow directions carefully, you should receive
full credit for the completed assignments. Samples of successfully completed assignments are
available 1 hour before the
Midterm examination at Dr. Schock's
office.
The label on the
outside of your folder should be a minimum size of 5 inches by 7 inches with
your full name (circle your last name, please); also, indicate on the label the
assignments that are being turned in.

Be sure to check the
video viewing schedule on the last page of this course syllabus for TELEVISION
viewing times. As mentioned
elsewhere in this outline, you may LEASE
the videos from the WVC
library so that you can view the programs at your convenience. Another option would be to set your VCR
at the times listed. Elsewhere in
this course syllabus you will find sample questions for the midterm and the
final exam. Be sure to study them
as a way of getting a "feel" of the upcoming exams, which will be 100
multiple-choice questions for each examination. You may e-mail me anytime with questions you may
have. BE SURE to follow the
guidelines for emailing me.
Telecourses require
self-discipline because we meet only three times; once for orientation, once
for the midterm and once for the final examination. There will be no in-class lectures. Dr. Schock highly recommend s that you plan on studying 2-3 hours for
each unit of this course, which would be 3 units times 3 equals 9 hours per
week. In other words, you
should be studying about 9 hours a
week to succeed in this course; you will be watching the videos, reading the
text assignments and doing the Internet assignments. Feel free to e-mail me if you have questions.
As already mentioned, when you e-mail Dr. Schock, be sure to say WVC
student in the subject line and
then please identify yourself, what telecourse you're enrolled in, and your
question. Be sure to identify yourself
and which telecourse you're enrolled in (I have three telecourses) because Dr.
Schock may be off campus at the
time he retrieves your e-mail
message and it will make it easier for him to respond to you promptly.
Remember, you're basically on your own in this course.

In the event of the following
situations, the West Valley College Safety

FIRE ALARM OR EVACULATION
NOTICE
If the fire alarm sounds in
the building OR an evacuation is requested by an administrator OR Campus
Police, follow your instructor to the designated assembly area (see maps at the
back of each classroom). Take your
VALUABLES with you. After your
instructor checks that all students are accounted for and the official
"ALL CLEAR" is given, you will be instructed when to leave the
area. The nearest fire alarm
is near the Business Division Office.
The nearest Fire Extinguisher
is in the Business Division Office.
Call 911 to report a fire
before you attempt to put it out.
Inform the division or
department secretary that 911 has been called and where the emergency is
located.
EARTHQUAKES
If an earthquake occurs,
immediately take cover under a sturdy desk, table, or other furniture OR
Drop to the floor, fold arms
on floor close to your knees and bury face in arms.
Move away from windows and
wall shelves and heavy equipment.
Do NOT run outside during the
shaking--you may fall and be injured.
EVENING SAFETY ESCORTS
Escorts are available from
4-10 p.m. Monday--Thursday at NO COST during the Fall and Spring
semesters. Call the District

INJURY OR ILLNESS
If you or someone is
injured or ill while on campus, contact the Student Health Center for first aid
assistance, follow up care or referrals.
Report to the Student Health Center all student accidents that occur on
campus or at college sponsored activities. Student Health
Emergency Line: Ext. 222. Call for First Aid assistance. Life
Threatening Emergencies like heart attacks, strokes, etc., call 911. From any college office, dial (9); then,
911.
MAJOR DISASTER or
terrorist threat
A Command Center will be set
up at the Campus Center in the event of a major disaster when phones may not
be working and outside assistance is not readily available. A representative
of your building or class should be sent to report problems or injuries.
