Textbook assignment:

 

___ 1. Look at the list of vocabulary words for this section on page 444. Use the  vocabulary CD to listen to the pronunciation of these words, and then listen and repeat, paying close attention to pronunciation.

__ Read and repeat the key words on page 411 several times. Then, close your book, and name the parts of the body that come in twos (les oreilles, les yeux etc.), then those of which we have only one (un coeur, un estomac etc.).

__ Study the �blue box� on top of page 412. Remember to use avoir mal �, to indicate the location of body pain.

__ Read the mini-dialogue on page 412, paying close attention to pronunciation. S.O.S. M�decins is a 24-hour emergency medical clinic that offers home visits by its doctors.

This grammar point allows you to gain familiarity with impersonal expressions, before using them in complex sentences with the subjunctive, that you will also learn in this lesson. In fact, using the infinitive with these expressions is a good strategy for avoiding the more complex constructions with the subjunctive!

__ Start by skimming over the expressions and vocabulary presented in the box on page 422. Then, read the text on page 421. Mentally match the expressions in the list to specific advice given by the doctor. If you don�t understand each word in the article, don�t be discouraged. Pay attention to the kind of reading and make use of what you already know.

This reading is clearly about health and well-being, so ask yourself What kind of answers would I expect to find in an article on these topics? How does this compare with what I read on page 421? Use contextualized guessing, and don�t forget to look closely for cognates! At this stage of your learning process, when possible, it�s a good idea to provide a synonym in French for each �new� French word or expression rather than simply translate it in English.
