Chapitre 7, Leon 1
Textbook
assignment:
____ 1. Go over the list of vocabulary words for this lesson on pages 289-291. These words are pronounced for you on CD#9 of the Audio Program (Track #1). Listen and repeat the entire list of vocabulary at least once before beginning Lesson 1.
If you purchased a used book without the Audio Program, you can listen to a cassette recording in the Language Lab. However, since youll want to listen to this recording often, you should take a blank 60-minute tape to the Language Lab or AV desk in the Library and ask to have the vocabulary tape copied.
____ 2. Points de dpart, pages 249-250
Au caf: Read the dialogue over several times for comprehension, referring to the vocabulary list on page 289 if necessary. Then practice reading the dialogue aloud.
Note that there are optional practice activities for each Point
de dpart section on
your CD-ROM and on the text website: http://www.prenhall.com/cheznous.
Study the vocabulary on page 250, using the vocabulary CD (#9). You should listen to each of the words or expressions and then repeat them out loud, paying close attention to pronunciation and intonation (the way the pitch of your voice rises and falls.
Use
a pencil to draw a line through any silent letters that you personally might
have a tendency to pronounce but which should be silent, for example: compris,
chocolat, faim, jus. Underline any letters that are pronounced that you might
have a tendency not to, for example: hamburger, prendre.
_____ 3. A vous la parole page 251
Exercise A: Write out and correct. Answers will vary but will resemble those that follow.
Exercise B: Write out a two sentence dialogue for #1-#3. Answers will resemble those that follow.
1. Il fait trs chaud.
 Quest-ce que je vous sers?
Un sandwich au jambon et un coca.
2. Vous avez trs froid.
 Quest-ce que je vous sers?
 Un chocolat chaud.
3. Vous devez travailler trs tard.
 Quest-ce que je vous sers?
 Un caf-crme.
Exercise C: Practice saying aloud things you might order in a French caf.
Even if you dont have a study partner, its important to practice the exercises meant for paired or group work aloud. Dont just do the answers in your head; talk to yourself out loud. This is important for reinforcing both content and vocabulary. You need as much oral practice as you can get. If you have the time, and havent done so already, consider getting a tutor. It wont cost you anything at the college and will provide excellent practice and feedback.
_____ 4. Eclairages, page 252
Study this section, writing short notes and using a highlighter. There will be general questions on the cultural information presented in the Eclairages sections on your exam.
_____ 5. Sons et lettres, page 253 and A vous la parole, page 254
Study the information in this section using a highlighter and taking notes. The pronunciation of the letter e is probably the most confusing of all letters in French and you will need to really concentrate on what is written here in order to be able to apply it.
Practice exercises A, B, and C on page 254 applying the rules you studied on the previous page. Ideally, you should be able to tell why you pronounce (or dont pronounce) each word as you do. Then use Student Audio CD# 2 (Track 1) to confirm your pronunciation. This is one of the two CDs used with the textbook, not one of the Lab Audio CDs used with the Lab Manual.
_____ 6. Formes et fonctions 1, page 255
Study and learn the conjugations and meaning of the verbs presented in this section.
Note that there are optional practice activities for
each Formes et fonctions section on your CD-ROM and on the text website: http://www.prenhall.com/cheznous.
_____ 7. A vous la parole, pages 256
Exercise A: Write out and correct with the answers that follow. These answers may vary somewhat depending on your interpretation of the items in the drawings.
Note that the model uses the indefinite article (un, une or des). For several sentences, a different article (the partitive) would be possible. But since that isnt explained until the following page in your textbook, just use the indefinite article in this exercise.
1. Elle prend un th au citron. / Elle prend un caf-crme.
2. Ils prennent une pizza et une glace.
3. Il prend un caf-crme. / Il prend un th au citron.
4. Elle prend un coca.
5. Ils prennent des sandwichs.
Exercise B: Write out and correct with the answers that follow. Remember that the names of languages (as well as adjectives of nationality), while capitalized in English, are not capitalized in French.
Note that the model for this exercise treats the je as if you were speaking to the person who made the statement. So when the statement says I live in Russia, you would respond You understand Russian. Likewise, when a statement says We are going to Qubec, ou would respond, You are learning French.
1. Alors elle comprend litalien.
2. Alors tu comprends le russe.
3. Alors il comprend lallemand.
4. Alors vous comprenez le franais.
5. Alors ils comprennent lespagnol.
6. Alors ils apprennent le russe.
7. Alors vous apprenez lespagnol.
8. Alors elle apprend lallemand.
9. Alors tu apprends le portugais.
10. Alors vous apprenez le franais.
Exercise C: Say out loud what you would drink in each situation. Answers will vary.
_____ 8. Formes et fonctions 2, page 257
Study the information in this section using a highlighter and taking notes. The book gives a fairly good explanation of what can be a rather complicated aspect of French grammar.
Heres a quick overview of the three articles youll be working with. On the following page, youll find a clarification of the use of these articles. If youre comfortable doing the exercises just by following the models in the textbook, you can skip over this information. If you want a more detailed explanation, the information may be useful.

If you have a certain amount of confusion, its most likely because, in English, its usually not necessary to use an article with a noun.
Consider: Im studying French. Jtudie le franais.
He likes ice cream. Il aime la glace.
Were eating pizza. Nous mangeons de la pizza.
In French, the general rule might be: Unless youve learned an exception, nouns normally require an article. The question is going to be which article. Hopefully, the information on the following page will help you answer that question.
Clarification
of articles
1. In French, the article can vary, depending on the context and meaning. Compare the following sentences.
1) Do you like the wine? Aimez-vous le vin?
Voulez-vous du
vin? }
2)
Do you want some wine?
3) Do you want wine?
In the first sentence, the definite article is used to denote a (1) specific or (2) presupposed item (meaning you know specifically what noun is being referred to). In this instance it doesnt matter if its a mass noun or a count noun. You know specifically what is being refered to. This is similar to English.
In the next two sentences, the partitive article is used to refer to an unspecified mass noun. In other words, it is used to indicate a portion of a mass noun (as opposed to the mass noun in general). In English, you can use the article, as in sentence #2, or you can leave it out, as in sentence #3. In French, you cant leave it out.
2. There is one use of
the definite article that is not really explained in the book, although there are several examples of its use. Look
at the first example in your book at the top of page 257. The definite article is also used with mass nouns
when referring to the entire category that the noun represents.
Jaime le caf. I like coffee.
In the above sentence the definite article is used to indicate the mass noun in general. Contrast that with the following use of the partitive article:
Je voudrais du caf. Id like coffee. [or: Id like some coffee.]
And although your book doesnt specifically mention it, the indefinite article could also be used with this noun. The meaning, however, would be different:
Je vais prendre un coca. Im going to have a coke.
3. In summary, all three articles (definite, indefinite, and partitive) might be used with the same noun and be grammatically correct. Its the meaning of the sentence that will determine which article is used.
Examples: Jadore
lOrangina.1 I
love Orangina.
Jachte lOrangina et tu achtes le vin.2 Im buying the Orangina and youre buying the wine.
Je vais boire une Orangina.3 Im going to drink an Orangina.
Je bois souvent de lOrangina.4 I drink Orangina often.
1 The definite article is used
because it refers to the mass noun in general.
2 The definite article here is
used to denote a specific or presupposed item.
3 Even though Orangina would
normally be considered a mass noun, the indefinite article is used to mean an
or one Orangina.
4 The partitive article is used with a mass noun.
You might think of it as meaning some Orangina, as opposed to Orangina in
general.
Dont be discouraged. If it seems somewhat complicated, it can be. Study the information in this section well, and each time you do a related exercise, be able to tell why youve used the article you have. But dont stress over it. With time increased exposure to French youll begin to use the articles correctly automatically.
_____ 9. A vous la parole, page 258
Exercise A: Write this exercise out and correct. Note: The model uses a partitive article in the exercise to indicate a portion of a mass noun. But many of the sentences could also take an indefinite article. For example, the answer to sentence #4 is:
Gnralement, je prends du coca avec des glaons.
But you could also write:
Gnralement, je prends un coca avec des glaons.
For the sake of simplicity, and in order to reinforce the use of the partitive article, follow the model for this exercise, using the partitive article when possible. When writing your sentences, underline the article and think about why youve used the article you have.
1. Comme dessert je prends de la glace.
2. Avec une pizza je prends du coca.
3. Quand jai trs soif, je prends de la limonade.
4. Gnralement, je prends du coca avec des glaons.
5. Quand il fait trs chaud on prend de la limonade.
6. Dans un th au citron on met du sucre ou du citron,
7. Quand on veut manger quelque chose on prend de la salade (or: un sandwich au jambon / un hamburger et des frites, etc.)
8. Quand on veut boire quelque chose on prend de leau minrale.
Exercise B: Write this exercise out. Answers may vary but will resemble those that follow. Again, the partitive articles have been used for most of the sentences. but you might also use the indefinite article in several of them.
1. Elle prend de la salade ou des crudits.
2. Elle prend de la glace.
3. Elle prend de leau minrale et une salade.
4. Il prend de la limonade.
5. Il prend une salade et des frites.
6. Il prend de la pizza, du coca, et de la glace.
7. Il prend un hamburger, des frites, et un coca.
Exercise C: Write out one sentence for each of the items, telling what you would have in each situation. Answers will vary.
_____ 10. Lisons, page 259
Do all of the reading activities on page 259, except D.2. You can write your answers in your book. Answers will vary.
When youve finished the textbook exercises for this leon staple them together with this
assignment checklist on top, and place them in the Chapter 7 section of your
course binder.
Chapitre 7, Leon 1
Workbook
assignment
_____ 1. Exercises 7-1 through 7-7, pages WB 99-WB101, in the Workbook/Lab Manual
Do
the corresponding written exercises for this lesson.
_____ 2. Ecrivons, page WB101-WB102
Do the pre-writing exercise, exercise 7-8, by writing short notes in your workbook.
Follow all of the directions for the Ecrivons section (7-8 A, B, and C), but include only the final product when you turn in your assignment. The paragraphs should be typed, double-spaced, or written by hand very neatly with room between the lines for comments or corrections. Be sure to include all accent marks. Cut out your paragraph to fit and staple or tape it to the top of page WB102.
Chapitre 7, Leon 1
Lab
Manual assignment:
_____ 1. Use the Audio Program to do the corresponding oral comprehension exercises for leon 1 in your Lab Manual.
_____ 2. Correct your exercises using the Answer Key at the end of the Workbook/Lab Manual (page AK 17). Be sure to correct using a different colored pen or pencil (other than red).
Remember that youre required to
spend a minimum of six hours in the Language Lab during the first four weeks of
the semester. Use the taped version of the Audio Program to record your voice
after that of the native speaker and compare your accent and pronunciation. This is important, as the
pronunciation habits youre establishing now are those that will most likely
continue throughout the course. It is very difficult to acquire the correct
pronunciation of a word once youve learned it incorrectly.
The
first time you use the lab, youll need to fill out a timecard. Be sure to
punch the card with the time clock when you begin lab practice and also when
youve completed it.
Chapitre 7, Leon 1
Vocabulary
Review the vocabulary for this leon. You should know what the words
mean, how to pronounce and spell them, and be able to use them in simple
sentences.
CHAPITRE 7: Leon 2
Chapitre

Study this
section, writing short notes and using a highlighter. Remember that there will
be general questions on the cultural information presented in the Eclairages sections on your exams.
_____ 4. A vous la parole, pages 262-263
Note: Vocabulary and
eating customs vary among French-speaking cultures. Your book sometimes gives
terms that are used in Canada as well as those used in French. French-Candian
words are usually indicated by (Can.) in the vocabulary list at the end of the
chapter. The linguistic differences between the two are sometimes compared to
the differences between English spoken in Great Britain and English spoken in
the United States.
In France the meals
are: le petit djeuner, le djeuner, et le dner. In Canada, they are: le djeuner,
le dner, and le souper. In France, also, many people refer to the evening meal as
le souper, as soup is often served as
part of this meal.
In both countries,
small children often have an after-school snack, le goter, around four oclock. They may have a pain au chocolat (a crossant or a portion of a baguette with chocolate
inside), un fruit, un yaourt, or des
tartines, with juice or water to drink

_____ 9. Formes et fonctions 2, pages 268-269
Study the
information on these pages carefully, using a highlighter.
Note the
second bulleted point on page 269. This is probably the most complicated
grammar rule youll encounter in French. If you can remember to apply it,
youll be doing very well.
Agreement of Past
Participles
Heres
a short recap of the two rules that apply to the agreement of past participles:
1. The past
participles of the tre verbs (aller,
arriver, venir, revenir, devenir, entrer, rentrer, retourner, partir, sortir,
passer, rester, tomber, monter, descendre, natre, and mourir) agree in number and gender with the subject of the sentence.
Examples:
Elles sont arrives lheure mais Jacques et Bernard sont
arrivs en retard.
2. The past participles of all other verbs—those
conjugated with avoir (the vast majority) and those of reflexive
verbs—agree with a preceding direct object, if there is one.
Examples: Jai mang les pommes. No
agreement. There is a direct object, but it doesnt come before the verb.
Les
pommes? Je les ai manges. Les is the direct object. It represents les pommes (feminine plural). Since the direct object precedes the
verb, there is agreement with the past participle.
Elle
sest couche. The
reflexive pronoun se is also the direct object. Here, its feminine (she put
herself to bed) and so the past participle agrees with the preceding direct
object.
Contrast the last
example (Elle sest couche) with Elle
sest bross les cheveux. In the second
sentence the reflexive pronoun is not
the direct object; les cheveux is. (What
did she wash? She washed her hair.) In this instance, the direct object
does not precede the verb; consequently, there is no agreement.
Dont spend
an enormous amount of time on the rules above. Since this is a Homestudy
course, and since the concept can be somewhat confusing, a more in-depth
explanation has been provided here. But you wont encounter #2 above very often
(and native speakers sometimes make errors with past participle agreement), so
your time will be better spent studying verb conjugations and vocabulary.
_____ 10. A vous la parole, pages 269-270
Exercise A:
Write out and correct with the answers that follow. Answers will vary but the
choice and placement of the direct object pronouns will be the same.

CONGRATULATIONS!
You have
completed the first of six chapters assigned for French 1B. A good part of your
preparation time for this chapter was spent learning how the course works, how
to use the course tools, and figuring out the best and most efficient ways to
study.
Since the
remaining assignments follow the same patterns, you should find that youll
spend less time figuring things out and more time on the language itself.
Consequently, your time will be spent much more efficiently.
