    Exercise A. 1. Compare the brief description of the article page 339 to the one on page 339. What are the differences? Explain what the writer means when he writes about the different ways of spending dimanche.

Note that the noun rattrapage comes from the verb rattraper (to make up, to catch up) and the noun retrouvailles comes from the verb retrouver (to meet up with, to meet again).

 

    Exercise A. 2. Brainstorm activity. Do this activity en fran�ais!

 

    Exercise B. As you read excepts from the article, consider the points 1 through 6. You should be able to answer the questions, but you don�t need to write the answers out.

 

    Exercise C. Read through each of the questions and think about the answers. You can check your answers with those below.

 

1. He is emphasizing the dislike some people have of Sundays. Verbally, such person would put an emphasis on the way he/she pronounced d�-tes-tent, insisting on each syllable to express their disgust.

 

2. a. des chauffeurs du dimanche: people who go out only on Sundays (and have the reputation of driving very poorly or slowly for lack of experience).

b. bruncher: a good example of how Canadian French mixes French and English.

c. souper: to eat diner. Refers to the more rural tradition of eating soupe for diner. This word is obsolete in the language of young people in France but is still common among older people and in French Canadian.

3. Facing the end of the weekend and the return of the daily routine, people feel depressed. (See page 162, �clairages, for an explanation of the expression m�tro-boulot-dodo).
