French 11B, a 1/2-unit lab class, is required of all students enrolled in French 1B. You will earn an additional .5 unit of credit for completing the work in French 11B.

Hours Lab is open: Hours for the Language Lab vary each semester. See the hours posted on the door of the lab (room LA27). You can use the lab at any time the lab is open; it doesn�t need to be when your lab instructor is there.

Books and Materials:

1)    Chez nous Workbook/Lab Manual: This workbook is divided into two parts: a written workbook for use with the Chez nous textbook, and a Lab Manual with listening comprehension and speaking activities, which is used in the French 11B class.

2)    The Chez nous Audio Program on CD (not to be confused with the Student Audio CD�s, which are used with the textbook): Copies are available for use in the Language Lab or you may take blank CD�s to the lab and request copies for home use if you didn�t purchase the Audio Program in a textbook/workbook package.

3)    A CD player (optional): You can complete all of the Lab Manual lessons in the Language Lab; however, most students will want to use a portable machine at home and in their cars, in addition to time spent in the lab.

 

 

The Language Lab:


The Language Lab is not equipped with CD players. Consequently, all of the audio materials on CD have been transferred to cassette tape. The lab houses the following materials for use for French 1B/11B:

1)    the Student Audio Tapes (which go with the textbook)

2)    a Vocabulary tape (recording of the vocabulary lists at the end of each chapter in the textbook)

3)    the Lab Audio Program (for use with the Lab Manual portion of the Workbook/Lab Manual)

4)    the optional Chez nous video

 

IMPORTANT: If you didn�t purchase the complete Lab Audio Package and want any of the audio components copied for French 1B or 11B for home use: SEE THE FRENCH 1B COURSE SYLLABUS FOR INSTRUCTIONS on having the CD�s duplicated.

 

 


Course requirements:

 

1)    Completion and self-correction of the exercises in the Lab Manual, Chapters 7-12.

 

2)    A minimum of 6 hours in the lab using the lab recorders during the first four weeks of the semester.

 

3)    The viewing of one full-length French movie or attendance at a French-related cultural event.

4)    A typed 100-word summary describing the movie or cultural event (in French) turned in no later than three weeks before the end of the semester.

5)    Maintenance of all corrected and graded assignments in your French 1B course binder. Please bring this binder with you to your French 1B exams.

 


Grading:

Grades will be based on the following:

�       Lab Manual lessons 7-12 (10 points each)       60 points

�       6-hour in-lab requirement                        20 points

�       French movie summary                            20 points

A = 100-90%; B = 89-80%; C = 79-70%; D = 69-60%; F = Less than 60%

 

You may choose to receive a letter grade (A, B, C, D, or F) or a CR/NC (credit/no credit) grade. In order to receive credit for a CR/NC grade, you must obtain at least 70% of the points possible. You need to inform the instructor by the deadline listed in �Important Dates,� below.

 

Note: If you decide to discontinue this course, it is your responsibility to drop the course; otherwise, you will receive a grade based on the criteria above.

 

School policy:

You must do your own work at all times. Copying answers from an Answer Key is completely unacceptable. If you copy an assignment, you will receive an "F" (0 points). If you do it twice, you will fail the course. Likewise, copying a film summary from a website or other source is plagiarism, and will result in an "F" grade. If you have any questions about this policy, please read the Policy on Cheating, "Student Responsibilities," in the WVC Catalog.

 

 

Using the lab equipment:

You�ll use the lab to record your voice and compare your answers, accent, and pronunciation with those of the native speakers on the master tape.

 

 

 

�     To use the lab equipment, take the appropriate tape from the French tape drawer, located on the side wall of the lab, and place it side �A� up in the tape player. The controls on the lab recorders resemble those on a portable tape player.

�     To use the record mode, press [Drill] and speak into the headphones. Speak in a soft voice; the microphones are very sensitive. Push rewind and then push play to hear your voice along with that of the native speaker.

�     To erase your voice, push [Drill] and play the tape through the part you�ve recorded, without saying anything. Please be sure to erase your voice from the tape before returning it to the tape drawer so that other students will not hear your voice on the tape.

 

 

g Be sure to punch in and out on the time clock each time you log time in the lab, until you have reached the minimum 6-hour requirement. See the lab supervisor or assistant on your first visit to fill out your time card.

 

g The six hours are a minimum in-lab requirement. You�ll need to spend many more hours on your own listening to the audio CD�s and practicing pronunciation and speaking.

 

g While you�re not required to use the Language Lab beyond the 6-hour minimum requirement, you are encouraged to use the lab as much as possible. Regular players allow only to hear French. You cannot record and make comparisons on your home equipment.
