COURSE DESCRIPTION:
   
 

Administration of Justice pre-service and in-service students will apply knowledge/skills learned in the program through a supervised work experience internship at selected criminal justice agencies, industrial or retail security establishments, suicide or rape crisis centers, or an agency approved by the instructor.  Background checks will be conducted by most criminal justice agencies and students with felony arrest convictions may be excluded. Must be 18 years of age or older to intern at penal institutions. Credit/No Credit Option.


COURSE GOALS:
 
  • To provide a knowledge of the various agencies encompassing the administration of justice system and the inter-relationships between them.
     

  • To develop the ability of the student to recognize the administration of justice agency best suited to his or her talents and aspirations.
     

  • To develop an appreciation of the complexity of the criminal justice system and the many sub-systems that supports its overall effectiveness.


GENERAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:
   
 
  • Students are required to work 100 Criminal Justice Agency Hours, 10 hours by arrangement, on average, with a criminal justice agency. Work must be with an approved agency, such as: Police Departments; Sheriff's Departments; Public Defender's Office; Office of the District Attorney; Courts; Corrections (i.e. Juvenile Hall, County Jail, Boys or Girl's Ranches); Industrial or Retail Security; Support services such as--Santa Clara Valley Rape Crisis Center; Suicide Crisis Hotline; Drug/Alcohol rehabilitation Center's); The Center for Living with Dying, or any agency approved by the instructor.
     
  •  Each student is responsible to arrange his/her own placement, with instructor approval.
     
  • 80 arrangement hours are allowed for the job search, application, interview's, screening, and related instructor assignments.
     
  • Student email addresses, to be provided instructor by student, upon registration.

EVALUATION METHODOLOGY:

   
  1.  STUDENT AGENCY WORK-PROGRESS REPORTS
  • Progress reports are to be given by each student online, via email to the instructor.
     
  • Due dates are posted on the Angel online class website.
     
  • Students will be graded credit (+) or no credit (-).

 

  2.  AGENCY INTERNSHIP EVALUATION FORM:
  • Due date is posted on the Angel online class website.
     
  • 100 agency hours required of all students. Be sure, by the due date, that the evaluation document is completed & signed by your agency supervisor, yourself, and that your hours are documented.  Failure to complete this form will result in a no-credit grade. **Make a copy for yourself; the instructor retains the original

 

  3.  RESUME: Due date is posted on the Angel online class website.
  • Note: optional, but required for a letter grade.
  4.  ARRANGEMENT HOURS:
  • 80 arrangement hours are allowed for the job search, placement, screening, application, interviews, plus instructor assigned tasks: i.e., autobiographical paper/report, cover letter, and resume.

 

ITEMS OF INTEREST:

       
 
  • Repeatability: Please remember that this class may be repeated 3 times for a total of 12 units of AJ elective credits. (This course transfers to a 4-year college as AJ elective credit). You may to wish to intern 4 times total with the same agency working various assignments or instead, intern with 4 different criminal justice agencies. The choice is yours.
     

  • Agency Visits/Calls by Instructor: Random phone calls or visitations may be made by your instructor to your agency & consultation may occur with your Agency supervisor.
     

  • Prerequisite: must be 16 years of age or older
     

  • Acceptable for credit. California State University.
