
BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY
Spring 2002
This course is
designed to present the basic technical principles of photography, and the
practical application of those principles to photography as an art and
craft. Photo 1 is a three unit
course and as such requires two hours of lecture and three hours of Photo 1L
attendance per week.

Equipment and
Supplies:
A. Lab equipment
will be furnished for class work.
B. Students
can use their own cameras, but it must be An Adjustable Camera. We have a few cameras that are
available for check out.
C. Students
are required to purchase EXPENDABLE photographic supplies. A kit containing all these supplies may
be purchased at the Viking Bookstore or local camera shops. Your lab instructor will give a list of
all these supplies to you.

Attendance:
This photography
course includes so much material, and is so closely scheduled that regular
attendance is extremely important.
There are many key lectures and laboratory demonstrations that, if
missed, will not be repeated.
Therefore, you must make every effort to attend all scheduled meetings
of your class. Any time lost may
be made up by attending a different lecture or lab section that is covering the
same material. Students that miss
their first lecture meeting will be dropped from the roster and their spot will
be filled from our waiting list.
Students adding to the class must return their processed add slips to
their lecture instructor by the next meeting or you will be dropped from the
class.
Equipment:
A. Each
student is responsible for all equipment checked out to him or her.
B. When
working in your lab space, you are responsible for all equipment numbered the
same as your darkroom. Check your
space to make sure that all equipment is present before you start to work. There is an inventory sheet in your lab
manual so that you can quickly check your space.
C. Equipment
will be issued only upon presentation of your Student ID. card you
are responsible for ALL equipment if it is lost, stolen, or
damaged. A fee will be computed
based upon the price of the merchandise.
Payment must be made to the finance office and applied to the
Photography Department's account no later than one week from the fee
determination or lab use will be denied.
Lab Projects:
Each student must
complete five photographic projects during the semester. These projects will have specific due
dates and will be handed in and graded on an individual project basis. Failure to turn in satisfactory
projects will result in a failing grade for the course.
Grading:
The grade earned
for this course will be determined by equal input from the lecture and lab
portions. A failing grade in EITHER
lecture or lab portions will result in a failing grade for the entire
course. If you elect to drop this
course and do not fill out a West Valley College drop slip for official
withdrawal, your final grade in this course will be an F. Your LECTURE INSTRUCTOR during his or
her normal must sign drop slips on campus hours. No drop will be allowed without your instructor's signature!
The following

Lecture
Examinations:
There will be ten
(10) quizzes given during the lecture portion of the course. The 20% quiz portion of your grade will
be determined from your ten quizzes.
There will be MAKE UP QUIZZES CAN BE TAKEN NO LATER THAN ONE WEEK
LATE. Missed quizzes will
count as 0 points. There will be
one midterm and a comprehensive final exam. If the midterm is missed, you must make arrangements for the
make up exam by the first lecture period after the midterm.
Extra Time in
Lab:
Lab work should be
completed in your scheduled lab period.
If space is available, you may attend another scheduled Photo 1
section. There will be a
fifteen-minute grace period at the beginning of each lab period. Lab spaces will be held during that
period. However, if the space is
still empty fifteen minutes into the period, the space will be given to a
waiting 1L student. If you know
that you will arrive after the grace period, you may hold your lab by calling 741-2424. If no one answers, leave a message and
your lab space will be held for you.
You may also complete extra work in the scheduled Photo 49A Lab.
