Course Description
This
class is an introduction to basic principles of electronic imaging through the
use of digital cameras, film and print scanners and Adobe Photoshop. The main emphasis of this class will be on
using Adobe Photoshop 6.0 images from digital cameras and scanned images. It is
designed to acquaint you with the basic controls and tools of the product and
give you a perspective on the application of those tools and controls in the
creation of digital images for the multimedia world.
Textbook:
The
textbook for the class is Adobe Photoshop 6.0 Classroom In A Book. Adobe Press publishes it. It comes with a CD-ROM. It is important that
the CD-ROM is with the book, so examine the book carefully before you purchase
it to make certain that the CD-ROM is included.
I
would also recommend Deke McClellandss Look & Learn
Photoshop 6 as a very good reference manual. It is not required, but
would be a very useful companion to Adobe Photoshop 6.0 Classroom In A Book,
I
would also strongly suggest that you take books to Kinkos and have a
coil-binding put on them. This is very useful when using the textbook while
working at the computer, It enables you have your book lie flat next to you on
the desk.

Supplies:
You
will need a 100mb Iomega Zip Disk to store your images and personal work done
in class. You will need to purchase a disk preformatted for the platform on
which you will be doing your primary work outside the West Valley lab and class
environment. If you are using a PC at home, work or elsewhere, you will need to
purchase a disk preformatted for the PC to start. The Macintosh operating
system in the classroom will read and recognize this disk.
Since
you will be producing photographs for some projects in this class, you will
need to have access to a 35mm camera. One with interchangeable lens capability
or with a zoom lens would most helpful.
In
addition to the above you will need to purchase a lab card from the Viking
Bookstore. The cost of the card is $5.00. Bring the receipt for the card to the
Tech Center check-in-window. There, with the completed Tech Center contract
form and your West Valley Photo Id card (Student Body Card), you will be
entered into the Tech Center computer.
Attendance and Grading:
The
class meets one day a week for five hours. In addition, you will be expected to
do two hours per week in the lab at times you arrange to fit your
schedule. A lot of information will be
covered in a short period of time. Each
class session will contain new information that may not be presented again in
the same depth at subsequent meetings.
Therefore, it will be of the utmost importance for you to attend every
meeting. It is expected that you will arrive on time for class. Late arrivals
will not be tolerated.
The
grading for this class will be based on your completion of several assigned
projects and demonstration portfolio of your work throughout the semester.
